A common problem
Chimney Repairs in Worcester — Stopping the Leak at Its Source
Chimneys are the most exposed part of your roof. They project above the roof covering, face the full force of wind and rain on all four sides, and rely on a series of mortar joints, lead flashings and a chimney crown to keep water out. When any one of those elements fails, water gets in — and chimney leaks are among the most difficult to trace because water can travel several feet from the entry point before appearing as a stain on a ceiling or a damp patch on a wall.
We see chimney problems regularly across Worcester and Worcestershire. Victorian and Edwardian properties are particularly susceptible — the original lime mortar has long since done its service, and the lead detailing was installed decades ago. Modern housing is not immune either — poorly installed flashings or crowns laid with an inadequate mix will fail prematurely.
Every chimney inspection we carry out starts at roof level. We will not diagnose a chimney problem from ground level — the only way to assess pointing, flashing condition, pot security and crown integrity properly is to get up there and look. We photograph everything and explain what we find before you commit to any work.

What we do
Chimney Repair Services We Provide
Chimney Repointing
Mortar joints between chimney bricks deteriorate over time — freeze-thaw cycles, rain and wind gradually erode the pointing until gaps open up. Once water gets into the masonry, frost damage accelerates rapidly. Repointing fills those joints with fresh mortar and stops the cycle.
Chimney Flashing Repair
The lead flashing where the chimney meets the roof is a primary leak point. Step flashings, soakers and back gutters need to be correctly dressed to code lead to remain watertight. We replace failed sections or re-dress flashings that have lifted, cracked or been bodged with sealant.
Chimney Stack Rebuild
Where masonry has deteriorated significantly — loose brickwork, cracked render, or a stack that has become structurally unsafe — a partial or full chimney rebuild is required. We take the stack down to a sound course and rebuild using matching or appropriate materials.
Chimney Pot Replacement
Cracked or loose chimney pots allow water to enter the flue and can become dangerous in high winds. We remove and replace pots, including capping redundant flues with a ventilated cap to prevent moisture build-up inside the unused stack.
Chimney Cap & Crown Repair
The mortar crown or concrete cap at the top of the chimney is exposed to the worst of the weather. Cracks here allow water directly into the flue and down into the chimney breast. We repair or replace crowns and ensure the pot is correctly seated and weather-sealed.
Rendering & Waterproofing
Some chimney stacks are rendered rather than exposed brickwork. Failed render allows water behind and can cause significant frost damage to the masonry below. We repair failed sections and apply a breathable waterproofing treatment where appropriate.

Questions answered
Chimney Repair FAQs
How do I know if my chimney is leaking?+
The most common signs are damp patches on the chimney breast inside the house, water staining on ceilings near the chimney, or a musty smell in the room that worsens after rain. The tricky part is that water can enter at the top of the chimney and travel several feet before appearing as a stain — so the leak source is not always directly above the damp patch. A proper inspection from roof level is the only way to diagnose it accurately.
Can I just seal the flashing with silicone instead of replacing it?+
We get this question a lot, and the honest answer is no — not as a permanent solution. Silicone does not bond reliably to lead long-term, it hardens and cracks with temperature movement, and it often traps water rather than stopping it. If a previous roofer has applied sealant to your chimney flashings, it is worth getting them properly replaced before that temporary fix fails and the leak resumes — possibly having worsened in the meantime.
Is a leaking chimney dangerous?+
It depends on the extent. A minor leak through deteriorated pointing is an annoyance that should be addressed promptly to prevent it worsening. A structurally unstable chimney — one with loose pots, significant masonry failure or a stack that has moved — is a genuine safety risk. We assess both the leak and the structural condition during every chimney inspection.
Do you need scaffolding to repair a chimney?+
For most full chimney strip-and-reflash jobs and any significant masonry work, yes. Scaffolding is the only safe way to work at chimney height for sustained periods. For minor accessible repairs — such as re-pointing a low stack or replacing a pot on a single-storey extension — a tower or ladder may be sufficient. We will confirm access requirements in your quote.
Can you cap or remove an unused chimney?+
Yes. If a flue is no longer in use, capping it with a ventilated cap is the sensible option — it keeps water out while allowing the flue to breathe, preventing condensation build-up inside. Full chimney removal is also an option for some properties, though it involves making good the roof covering where the stack was removed. We can discuss both options and what each involves.
How long does chimney pointing last?+
A proper repoint using the correct mortar specification should last 20 to 30 years. The key word is "correct" — a repoint using too hard a mortar mix (common with modern Portland cement) can actually accelerate deterioration by preventing the natural movement of the masonry. We use a mortar specification appropriate to the age and type of the brickwork.
