The basics
What Is Dry Verge Systems?
A dry verge system is a mechanically fixed, mortar-free method of securing the tiles or slates along the sloping gable edge of a roof — the verge. Traditionally, verge tiles are bedded in mortar and the gap beneath cloaked with a mortar fillet. Over time that mortar cracks, falls out and lets wind and rain work their way under the edge tiles.
A dry verge system replaces that mortar with interlocking UPVC or metal verges that clip over the edge of the tiles and screw down to the battens. The result is a permanently secure, weather-tight and maintenance-free roof edge that cannot crack, drop out or be lifted by storms.
Dry verge systems are now standard on new roofs across Worcester and Worcestershire, and they are an excellent upgrade on older properties where the verge mortar is failing. They pair naturally with a dry ridge system for a fully mortar-free, storm-resistant roof.

How we work
Our Process
We follow the same careful process on every job — so you always know what is happening and why.
01
Free verge survey
We inspect the gable edges from a ladder, assess the mortar, the verge tiles and the bargeboards, and advise whether a dry verge system or a targeted repair is the right call.
02
Written, itemised quote
You receive a clear breakdown of the system, the tiles reused or replaced, and the cost. No hidden extras.
03
Strip the old verge
We carefully remove failed mortar and any loose verge tiles, check the battens and underlay at the edge, and prepare a sound base.
04
Dry verge installation
Interlocking dry verge units are clipped over each tile course and mechanically fixed to the battens, creating a secure, weather-tight, mortar-free edge.
05
Clearance & handover
All debris removed, the verge checked for security and alignment, and a full walkround with you. Backed by our workmanship guarantee.

Questions answered
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a dry verge system?+
A dry verge system is a set of interlocking UPVC or metal units that clip over the tiles along the gable edge of your roof and screw down to the battens, replacing the traditional sand-and-cement mortar bedding. It secures the edge tiles permanently and weatherproofs the verge without any mortar to maintain.
How long does a dry verge system last?+
A quality dry verge system, properly installed, should last 25 to 40 years — effectively the life of the roof covering. The mechanical fixings do not degrade with frost or rain, so there is no re-pointing or maintenance required.
Can dry verge be fitted to my existing roof?+
Yes, in most cases. If your roof tiles and battens are sound, we can remove the failed mortar at the verge and retrofit a dry verge system without stripping the whole roof. This is a popular upgrade on Worcester homes with cracking verge mortar.
Should I have dry verge and dry ridge fitted together?+
It is usually the most cost-effective approach. If your ridge mortar is also ageing, doing both at once means one set of access equipment, one visit and a fully mortar-free, storm-resistant roof. We will advise on this during the survey.
How much does a dry verge system cost in Worcester?+
A dry verge installation on one gable of a semi-detached Worcester property typically costs £350 to £600. A detached home with both gables runs from £700 to £1,200. We provide a free, written, itemised quote specific to your roof.
Is dry verge better than mortar bedding?+
For nearly all roofs, yes. Mortar at the verge cracks with frost and wind, drops out, and lets water under the edge tiles. Dry verge holds the tiles mechanically and is completely maintenance-free. We still carry out mortar bedding where a listed building requires it.
