The basics
What Is Felt Roofing?
Felt roofing is the traditional built-up bituminous flat roof system — layers of bitumen-impregnated felt, bonded together (historically with hot poured bitumen, today mostly with a gas torch) to form a waterproof covering over a timber or board deck. A three-layer system, finished with a mineral surface, has been the standard flat roof on UK homes for decades.
Modern high-performance felt — the reinforced, polyester-based torched-on systems we install — is a big step up from the old pour-and-roll felts of the 1980s. It is more flexible, more durable and less prone to blistering. A well-installed three-layer felt roof still has a service life of 15 to 25 years, and it remains the most cost-effective flat roofing option.
We recommend felt where budget is the priority and the roof is a straightforward shape with good falls. For roofs that pond, balconies that are walked on, or customers wanting a longer lifespan, we will point you to EPDM or GRP. We install all three across Worcester and Worcestershire and will advise honestly on the best fit.

Questions answered
Frequently Asked Questions
What is felt roofing?+
Felt roofing is a built-up bituminous flat roof system made from layers of bitumen-impregnated felt, bonded together to form a waterproof covering. Modern high-performance felt is reinforced with polyester and torched on. A standard system uses three layers and lasts 15 to 25 years.
How long does a felt flat roof last?+
A well-installed three-layer high-performance felt roof typically lasts 15 to 25 years. That is shorter than EPDM (40–50 years) or GRP (30–50 years), but felt is the most affordable flat roof system, so the lifetime cost per year is competitive.
Is felt roofing still a good choice?+
For straightforward flat roofs with good falls where budget is the priority, yes — modern torched-on high-performance felt is a big improvement on the old pour-and-roll systems. For roofs that pond water, balconies that are walked on, or customers wanting a longer lifespan, we usually recommend EPDM or GRP instead. We will advise honestly on the best fit.
How much does a felt flat roof cost in Worcester?+
A 3-layer felt garage roof in Worcester typically costs £700 to £1,300. An extension roof runs from £900 to £1,900. On a per-square-metre basis, felt is usually £60 to £90 supply and fit. We provide a free, written, itemised quote specific to your roof.
Can you repair my existing felt roof?+
Yes. We carry out targeted patches, seam repairs and localised re-laying on existing felt roofs across Worcester. If the deck beneath is sound and the damage is localised, a repair can extend the roof's life by several years. If the felt is extensively cracked or blistered, a full replacement is more cost-effective.
Felt, EPDM or GRP — which should I choose?+
Felt is the budget choice (15–25 year life). EPDM is seamless with a 40–50 year life and is our default recommendation for most domestic flat roofs. GRP is the premium seamless, walkable option ideal for balconies. The right choice depends on your roof, your budget and how long you want the roof to last. We will explain the trade-offs during the survey.
