The basics
What Is Chimney Repointing?
Chimney repointing is the process of grinding out the decayed, crumbling mortar from the joints of a chimney stack and replacing it with fresh, correctly-mixed mortar. Over decades of Worcestershire weather — driving rain, frost cycles and temperature swings — the mortar between chimney bricks or stones gradually breaks down. Once it goes, water soaks into the stack, freezes, and forces the masonry apart.
A chimney that needs repointing is not just a cosmetic issue. Failed mortar lets water into the stack, which travels down into the roof space, stains internal ceilings and rots the adjacent timbers. Left long enough, the stack itself becomes unstable — and a loose chimney pot or top course is a genuine safety hazard above a busy Worcester street or garden.
Repointing a chimney early — before the bricks themselves start to spall and crack — is a far cheaper and longer-lasting fix than waiting for a full rebuild. We repoint chimney stacks across Worcester, Malvern, Droitwich and the wider county, matching the original mortar style and finish where appropriate.

How we work
Our Process
We follow the same careful process on every job — so you always know what is happening and why.
01
Free chimney survey
We inspect the stack from a ladder or scaffold, photograph the mortar and brick condition, and advise whether repointing, partial rebuild or a full rebuild is required.
02
Written, itemised quote
You receive a clear breakdown of the work, the mortar mix and finish, and any bricks or pots to be replaced. No hidden extras.
03
Rake out old mortar
We grind out the decayed mortar to a sound depth — typically 15–25mm — without damaging the bricks, and clean the joints ready for pointing.
04
Repoint the stack
Fresh mortar is pressed into the joints, tooled to a weathered finish that sheds water, and matched in colour and style to the original where possible.
05
Clearance & handover
All debris removed, the stack checked, and a full walkround with you. Backed by our workmanship guarantee.

Questions answered
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does chimney repointing cost in Worcester?+
Repointing a single chimney stack on a semi-detached Worcester property typically costs between £350 and £650. Taller or detached stacks run from £550 to £950. If the top courses or pots need work, that is quoted separately. We provide a free, written quote so you know the exact cost first.
How do I know if my chimney needs repointing?+
Look for crumbling or recessed mortar between the bricks, spalling (face-blown) bricks, mortar debris in the gutter below, or damp patches on the internal chimney breast. If the mortar crumbles when you pick at it, the stack needs attention. A free survey from us will confirm exactly what is required.
How long does chimney repointing take?+
A standard single-stack repoint is usually completed in a day. Larger or taller stacks, or those needing a partial rebuild, may take two days. We work from scaffold or a tower for safe access and tidy up thoroughly before we leave.
Can you repoint a chimney without scaffolding?+
For most chimney stacks we use a scaffold tower or full scaffolding to work safely and properly — raking out and repointing cannot be done well from a ladder. On single-storey extensions or low stacks, a tower may be sufficient. Access costs are included in your quote.
What mortar mix do you use for chimney repointing?+
We use a durable sand-and-cement or lime-based mortar suited to the brick type and the age of the property. On period homes in Malvern and Worcester, a lime mortar is often the correct choice because it is breathable and flexible. We match the finish and colour to the existing pointing wherever possible.
Should I repoint or rebuild my chimney?+
If the bricks are sound and only the mortar has failed, repointing is the right fix and far cheaper. If the bricks themselves are badly spalled, the stack is cracked, or the top courses are loose, a partial or full rebuild is safer and more cost-effective long-term. We will always tell you honestly which is right for your stack.
